‘How can PEPP serve the goals of the CMU?’ - roundtable hosted by FESE, Better Finance and EFAMA

The European Commission is currently assessing the case for a policy framework to establish a successful European market for simple, efficient and competitive personal pensions, and determine whether EU legislation to create a pan-European Personal Pension Product (PEPP) is required to underpin this market. The Commission rightly considers that increasing savings in personal pensions is one of the priorities of the Capital Markets Union. From this perspective, a pan-European personal pension product (PEPP) would offer the potential to inject more savings into capital markets and channel additional financing to productive investments. A simple and cost-effective pension product as the PEPP is also considered to be key for the wellbeing of future retirees.

The industry and individual investors welcome the initiative of the Commission and support exploring how creating a PEPP would help the EU in meeting the challenges of an aging economy, the sustainability of its public finances, strengthen the provision of adequate retirement incomes, fostering increased long-term investment and facilitate the cross-border activity of providers in a competitive environment.

Our organizations believe that the quick launch of a PEPP is by far the most desirable way forward, rather than trying to harmonise the myriad of diverse and fragmented existing personal pension products within the EU.

The lunch discussion will examine the potential way forward for a successful PEPP initiative and what needs to be done for this initiative to successfully contribute to the Capital Markets Union. In particular, it will seek to address the obstacles, purpose and objectives of the PEPP for the CMU.
